If you must know, I started working on this chapter on 1 Jan 2019. Real life had been overwhelming but I foresee some free time in the near future where I can work on these translations. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make some decent progress, just like Bei Xiaowu.

Chapter 13: The Jin Ling Incident Between Liang Sheng and Bei Xiaowu

It was a week-long of military training once school started. The sun was extremely cooperative and shone brightly. In less than a month, we all looked like authentic natives of South Africa. Nevertheless, Liang Sheng’s skin is still that fair. During lunch, Bei Xiaowu mentioned, “Liang Sheng, if you were a girl, then Jiang Sheng can only be considered a half-completed product. I will never give her another glance, I will definitely woo you!”

Liang Sheng furrowed  his brows, “Stop being disgusting, Bei Xiaowu.”

I quickly added, “Exactly, two grown men, being so lovey-dovey, so disgusting!”

Bei Xiaowu hugged his bowl of noodles and shot me a look, “Jiang Sheng, with your half-completed looks, I bet you are feeling imbalanced. But, seeing that we are childhood sweethearts, your Xiaowu brother, me, will still take you in even if you are an unprocessed product.”

I stopped bothering about him and buried my head to continue eating. Bei Xiaowu often told others how we were childhood sweethearts, in love with each other, had pledged to live the rest of our lives together and that our relationship was stronger than gold. In actual fact, he was just sprouting nonsense. His feelings for me were nowhere as deep as his feelings for that bowl of noodles in front of him. As he talked about “how deep our feelings ran”, he was “cheating on me”.

On the second day of military training, he became interested in a girl named Jin Ling. He dragged Liang Sheng to me and said, “Jiang Sheng, I swear on our relationship based on mutual love that I have fallen in love at first sight with that chick named Jin Ling.”

At that time, I still had no idea who Jin Ling was and what she looked like. Bei Xiaowu excitedly described her to me. He said, “The one in your group, the one with willow eyebrows, apricot-shaped eyes, fair skin and is not tall and not short. Neither fat nor skinny. That’s the one.”

I nodded, “Oh, I know. But even if I was willing to be in a relationship based on mutual love with you, it doesn’t mean that Jin Ling is willing to fall in love with you at first sight.”

Bei Xiaowu said, “Jiang Sheng, I swear that your position as my official wife will stay untouched for fifty years. Just introduce me to her please.”

Liang Sheng laughed, “Bei Xiaowu ah, I think you should threaten our Liang Sheng’s position of the official wife. It’s more likely she will help you then.”

When I looked for Jin Ling, this girl with eyes full of innocence, I felt like an evil pimp. Hence, I didn’t allow her to say anything and forcefully expressed everything I wanted to say in one breath, “There is this boy called Bei Xiaowu who is interested in you. He wanted me to tell you about this. As for how he looks like, you should have seen yesterday, he came and look for me….”

Jin Ling blushed and said, “Then let him come and find me on his own.”

I passed on this happy news to Bei Xiaowu. Bei Xiaowu was ecstatic and brought Liang Sheng and I to Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) that afternoon and claimed that he will treat us to a feast.

After entering KFC, Bei Xiaowu went off to place orders happily.

Enjoying the aircon, I started imagining. How should I take the first bite of my chicken wing, or which two fingers should I use to hold on to my burger as I bite into it; Liang Sheng sat across me, smiled and tapped my nose, “Jiang Sheng, you are such a glutton.”

I flashed a cheeky grin at him. Liang Sheng understood my gluttony the best. Speaking of gluttony, I can’t help but think of the kitty at home. I guess, after spending so much time with this kitty, I have became a glutton kitty as well.

When I raised my head again, Bei Xiaowu was carrying a tray over. He placed it on the table majestically, “Come on, quickly eat!”

I took a look at the tray – it contained a small cup of cola and two free cups of water. I then took a look at Bei Xiaowu’s big and silly grinning face.

I said, “Bei Xiaowu, is this what you mean by a feast?”

Bei Xiaowu said, “Jiang Sheng, giving you some cola is already not too bad. Stop expecting so much; that Jin Ling was already interested in me in the first place. It’s not all your credit. I have thought about it already, Jin Ling and I will get married in no time, we will need to give birth to children and raise them up… I will need to start saving up.”

Liang Sheng ignored him and walked straight to the counter. I followed him like a kitty. Looking at the poster of the meals available, I told Liang Sheng softly, “Brother, it’s too expensive. I don’t want to eat any more.”

Liang Sheng hesitated for a long time and the people queuing behind started to be impatient. There were grumblings that urged him to be faster.

Liang Sheng took out some change from his pocket and started counting them. He said, “Jiang Sheng, we have our own money. Tell me, what do you what to eat?”

I looked and identified the cheapest set, “Brother, let’s order that carrot bun.”

Liang Sheng thought for a while before carefully laying the coins out on the counter. He told the service staff, “Give my sister a spicy burger.”

Liang Sheng carefully placed that small burger onto the tray and brought it over to the table, “Here, Jiang Sheng, you have a burger now.”

As we were about to get seated, a young lady stopped Liang Sheng and looked him once over. After a while, she smiled, “Sorry, I got the wrong person.”

Bei Xiaowu started mumbling to me, “Liang Sheng’s got some peach blossom luck.”

I told the lady, “It’s okay to mistaken someone. You can leave if there’s nothing else. We are going to eat.”

As she left, that lady smiled lightly as she looked at me and the “scrumptious” spread on our table.

Before long, she had brought over two sets of family bucket to our table and smiled very gently to us. Her smooth skin glowed like porcelain under her clothes. She said, “My name is Ning Xin. Ning from Peace (An Ning) and Xin from Trust (Xin Ren). I stay just nearby. If you need any help, you can give me a call.” After she said that, she left a name card on the table and left after glancing at Liang Sheng. Her ocean blue chiffon dress was like a refreshing waterfall that took over our summer.

Bei Xiaowu took the name card and stuffed it in his pocket, “Jiang Sheng, Liang Sheng, don’t blame me for being petty. The money in my wallet was stolen by someone in the hostel last night.”

I looked at Bei Xiaowu with a shock, “There are also thieves in the school?”

Bei Xiaowu said, “Look at you, Jiang Sheng, you are too innocent. There are also secret society members in school. If we have gangs in our school, what’s surprising about a thief?”

Liang Sheng said, “Quickly eat, Bei Xiaowu, don’t you have a date tonight? Stop scaring our Jiang Sheng here.”

Bei Xiaowu said, “In any case, be careful when you are staying at the hostel. Don’t say that your Brother Wu did not warn you guys.”

While Bei Xiaowu self claimed to be Brother Wu at KFC, he turned into Uncle Wu when he came back from his date.

He told me, “Darn it, Jiang Sheng, the person that Jin Ling was interested in is your brother. Are you trying to match-make me or your brother today?”

I laughed, “No wonder she agreed so readily. My brother’s charm is still that huge!”

Because of this, Bei Xiaowu ignored Liang Sheng for a week. He climbed to the rooftop of the hostel every night to sing and told everyone he saw that he was out of love. He also went around announcing that he want to issue a challenge against Liang Sheng.

In the end, Liang Sheng manage to bribe him with only one small pudding. The two of them walked a round around the stadium while I looked from afar. I had no idea what they talked about but overheard Bei Xiaowu saying, “What does love taste like? It’s not as good as a small pudding.”

It’s been a long time since I last read this novel as well. I don’t think Jin Ling will be playing an important role… but this Ning Xin lady? She sounds suspicious. Will keep her in mind.
