Meteor Garden 2018 Episode 31 Review

Lei has really become Shancai’s emotional pillow

It’s the start of a Caina-free episode after forever!!! EVERYBODY, REJOICE! Let the love triangle games begin.

I love how we started this episode with a wise Lei giving Shancai some helpful advice about life in general.

Ximen and Meizuo confronted Lei about Shancai. They asked him if Shancai were Jing’s replacement. Lei got easily defensive and told them that a person cannot simply replace another. I felt bad for him when they said that actually. Even though he had his own motives in pursuing Shancai, it was still offensive that they suddenly attacked him that way. They were claiming that they weren’t on Ah Si’s side but come on, who are you guys kidding?

Yu Sao treated Shancai to dinner. A wise old woman giving advice to a naive girl who is trying to be a martyr for love.

We never saw this in the original version and I loved how they did this. Shen Yue’s Shancai cried beautifully here. She ran after Yu Sao just to tell her that she wanted at least one person to know how she really feels. Poor girl who has just been trying to bottle up her feelings *sighs*.

The iconic necklace which went missing for a few minutes in the previous episode came to make an appearance again. Shancai really misses Dao Ming Si but she said that they are worlds apart so she has no choice but to end it.

Shancai acting like she isn’t heartbroken and that she didn’t break anyone’s heart. This was just awkward but refreshing to see. Instead of always avoiding him, this was a pretty smart way to show that she didn’t care about him.

Dao Ming Si angrily punching this school map. He said that if she at least showed a little bit of affection for him, he would have fought with his mother and even eloped with Shancai. Since she didn’t, then he does not want to have anything to do with her anymore.

Monkey Girl found out that Dao Ming Si was heartbroken over Shancai. She was up and ready to become his rebound again! Poor girl. It was pretty sad how Dao Ming Si asked her who she would choose between him or Lei. He just felt so inadequate and unworthy ever since Shancai broke his heart.

*Insert random transition to F4 graduating already*. In the original drama, F4 only graduated in the second season (2002 drama). I never expected to see them graduate already but since there won’t be season 2 for this version, then it’s just fine!

Monkey Girl asked Lei for a huge favor. She wants him to continue pursuing Shancai to make Dao Ming Si give up on Shancai. It was so nice how Lei’s reason for denying Xiaozi’s favor at first was because of F4.

So Xiaozi then has accepted Lei’s rejection to grant her favor. He suddenly changed his mind and accepted it.

Just putting it here because it was funny how the girls in this school relied on these flower boys as their source of motivation to go to school. Haha! I actually remembered getting bummed when my crushes of higher batches graduated already. True story.

HE PLAYED THE VIOLIN FOR SHANCAI IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. I have so many emotions so I just had to write them in all caps… Haha! I didn’t even care that it was Xiaozi who asked him to do it. I’m just very happy that they created this scene since this never happened in the original drama.

Of course, we all know that there is someone who got greatly affected (and probably the most) by this.

He said that he dedicated this song to her *sniffs*. We don’t even know what’s real or not anymore.

Xiaozi asked Shancai if she was touched by Lei’s love confession earlier. Shancai didn’t even know that it was…

Shancai saw how Xiaozi was acting weird and nervous when they were talking and she easily found out why.

Apparently, Dao Ming Si wanted to talk to her just to reject her again… Stay strong, Xiaozi! I remember this happening in the original drama too and I liked how everyone misunderstood the situation because…

  1. Xiaozi thought that she actually had a chance with Dao Ming Si
  2. Dao Ming Si thought that he would be over Shancai
  3. Shancai thought that Xiaozi and Dao Ming Si would end up together

This was such a heart-breaking realization from Shancai… Don’t worry! You will definitely get back together 😉

In a nutshell,

  • Lei has really started to become Shancai’s person and that already touches my heart. I don’t necessarily get second lead syndrome a lot in dramas but I am 100% sure that I have a Hanazawa Rui/Hua Ze Lei syndrome.
  • I have always praised Shen Yue for her acting in emotional scenes in this drama. However, I was not impressed as much when she was trying to hold herself back from crying in front of Yu Sao. I’m not sure if it was really her fault or it was just me getting annoyed at her character already haha! On the brighter side, I loved how she cried when she told Yu Sao that she likes Dao Ming Si. That was amazing!
  • I never saw this version’s Monkey Girl as a threat which is why I actually felt bad for her when she was being rejected again. It must have really sucked to have felt the same pain over the same cause again!
  • Darren Chen’s Hua Ze Lei!!! This guy just really owns Hua Ze Lei. You would think that he did not really act as his character because that’s how effortless he looks in this role. My favorite facial expressions from him came from the scene when Ah Si punched the school map (at least I thought it was). He looked so concerned and you would really see how he was already thinking of what to do in order to help his best friend and the girl that he cares about.
  • Overall, this was a pretty slow-paced episode and I feel like there was not still anything much going on. It was still a good episode to showcase the different characters’ (that we care about! HAHA still triggered lol) emotions. This is why I’m very excited to see the rest of the episodes!

What did you think of this episode?

Man sometimes I wonder… Even though Dao Ming Si really loves Shan Cai, he still barely understands her after all this time. Even when they were dating they bickered all the time. In real life, that doesn’t seem to bode well for a relationship. But Hua Ze Lei gets Shan Cai. He’s so supportive of her. I firmly shipped Dao Ming Si x Shan Cai when I was younger (because they’re “meant to be”!), but now that I’m older I’m starting to feel like maybe Hua Ze Lei is the better match for long-term relationship success 😆

That’s true actually. I feel like he cares more about his feelings rather than really understand Shancai. I agree with everything you said. Although the love is already too strong for both Ah Si and Shancai, Lei is still the ideal (and more realistic lol) man haha! Thank you for sharing your insights!

I really felt for Xiaozi in this episode, and I really liked how she has been portrayed in this version so far. You could really see that she was trying to be a good friend by stepping back and considering Shan Cai’s feelings, but with it comes her own struggle of containing her feelings for Ah Si. I felt really sad for her when she was trying to joke about the things she actually meant; great acting, honestly!

HUA ZE LEI THOUGH! While I’m still rooting for Ah Si and Shan Cai, I just can’t help but want Hua Ze Li to be happy. :(( The violin scene was just *hearts, hearts*. This guy is precious!

I agree with everything that you said about her. I still think that she has always been a great friend.

Same here 😦 I will always have a space in my heart for that precious guy. We just all want him to be happy!

I watched this episode again having watched the next few. For me it was so angsty, I was all over the place. I was backing Ximen when he said the Jing comment because I was thinking “Why Lei why?” I honestly thought Xiaozi might have found a crack in DMS’ armour as he was so battered. Gah!!!!
Ms Yu is awesome and said the best thing about life. I really liked this episode.

I am finding all the actors are really really good. You are right, Lei’s acting is so effortless. DMS at the graduation when he’s having photos taken and he saw Shancai though the crowd, the ping of hurt was there, and Shancai’s agreeing that if there was someone who could make DMS happy then she’d want that to happen (she’s has a slight crazy look as she talks and betrays her own feelings).

There are just so many feelings in this episode. I liked it too!

I agree with everything you said. They were all really good here. Shancai could really act well whenever she would try to betray her feelings!

I’m seriously surprised by the love triangle! There was no (at least I didn’t catch it) hunt that Lei liked Shancai, so it came out of the blue. It’s hard for me to believe… but again it could be the subbing that makes it harder for me to get into it. Interesting development though… I’d have to say I totally still ship Si and Shancai!! 😍

There were many subtle hints from Lei based on his expressions and words. I loved catching him having those moments actually. I think we all do! At the same time, we just want Lei to be happy as well.

Truthfully I was so confused as to why they HADN’T graduated yet! They mentioned some episodes back that Shancai was a sophomore when they were seniors when she was a freshman. Also they celebrated 2 new years?? Do chinese people celebrate both new years?

Oh yeah, I only noticed that now. That is confusing! Yes, both New Year and Chinese New Year. I don’t live in China but my country celebrates both as well!
